Cars - Cover or Shelter?
« on: August 09, 2015, 01:30:41 PM »

When Shangalar and me years ago early in dev process went through all sceneries in order to streamline the vision and movement blockers, we decided that every scenery which is roughly above waist height should block vision like a wall, because we noticed that we did not have a whole lot of sceneries to work with if we wanted to provide people with "shelter".

Only years later did Lidae come up with the cover system which has given us another angle on this issue and I'm interested to hear what people think about Cars, as many of them are of the same height as barrels or crates yet they block vision and thus dont provide cover.

For lack of a better word, Shang and me refer to a vision blocking object as "shelter" and to movement blocking items, with cover triggers for the hitchance malus as "cover".

Of course if we turned all cars from shelters into covers, certain maps will be reviewed again and might have other shelters placed to compensate. This affects only cars, al the trucks will still block vision as theyre quite tall.

+1 to keeping them as they are.

I could be crouching behind the car, only we don't have crouching animation. So I use my imagination.

fact is that unarmored cars do not stop bullets. So I think they should block vision, but not bursts. 9/10 shots will travel through the car with unaltered ballistics. 1/10 will ricochet.

Im fine with either. But keep in mind a lot of areas will just turn into open space with this change. And that's  a death trap, even against half hit chance.

Result would be more building camping

Edit: John mentioned this in last paragraph actually. Place additional hard shelter in maps like Vtec enterprises, GE, Adams school, Police Dpt, etc... and everything is cool

Cars with no roof = cover, roof cars = shelter.

But either way any is good

Keep them as they are for now until more appropriate objects can be used to block sight.

Maps like JC/VENT/Robco would be ruined.

I object to giving cover/sight malus but being able to be bursted, thats ridiculous.

I don't agree with the 90% bullet but i totaly agree on car cover, and yes, maybe replace some cars with trucks if it's an easy thing to do, preventing streets to become more snipers paradise. Or as Stalker said with wreckages and normal cars, but it seems unrealistic.

OR even maybe planet are align and car is of not block sight but is of reduce the sight with engine part have full cover and restof car having the partial cover!!!

you all know that the rims are the only cover from a vehicle, and taking cover behind a 16" rim is suicide. A rim will not stop many rifle bullets anyway.. cars and trucks provide, at best, concealment.

using the block as cover would require levitation. Also, my dog is to big to hide behind the block of my car.
