Title: Beginner Guide
Post by: Ender on September 18, 2014, 01:35:41 PM
Hello contributors !

I'm currently creating a beginner guide. This guide target the player that never play other Fonline game ( or neither Fallout 1 & 2 ) and is a step by step. I already did the first pages ( installation, character creation, interface is in wip ) and I will continue soon.

I'm looking for someone able to correct / improve my writing as english is not first language. It will maybe be one of the first document new player will read (let's hope ;o) so I do not want it to be in shity english.

So please response to this post and I will link you first pages. Once it will be done I will add a Beginner guide link on the wiki home page.

It will be my pleasure to help you in this matter.

Thank you.

I created a category to group all the page of the Beginner Guide ( Go here to access the category : http://fonline-aop.net/wiki/index.php?title=Category:BeginnerGuide ).

This need to be read again but I'think the "installation" & "character creation" pages are finished.
Could be great if you take the time to read them and improve them ( you know better sentences, less english errors, ... ).

If you think there is something big missing ( or you think some information are not adequate for noob ) please tell me ; In that case I will rework the pages.

I'm currently on the "Discover interface" so do not loose time on it ( seems it will be change a lot in the next hours / days )
Thank you very much for you help.

I've fixed a little bit of those nasty mistakes.
"These skills don't evolve as others and you can't tag them or spend points on them. "
http://fonline-aop.net/wiki/index.php?title=Beginner_guide:_Character_Creation
It was written as "... and you can tag them or spend point on them."
Like those. I'll double-check everythin there is once you'll finish interface page. You've done good btw.

Thanks. I should review more myself before submitting this to other eyes. Will try to re-read me more for next pages ;o

I will continue tomorrow.
I would like to do :
- Discover interface
- First step ( first map description to faction's choice )
- What can I do ( General description of available activities )
- I'm a Lawyer ( Description of the lawyer hq )
- I'm a V-tech
- ....
- Tips : Scanvenging ( what can I find , where and how to sell )
- Tips : Zone control ( teamplay description )

Or something like that but I do not know if I will have the time for all of this ( Will certainly do the Lawyer faction but I do not know the other ones ). I will try to link to existing ressources on the wiki.

Update !

I finished the "Discover interface" page.
Again I hope someone correct all mistakes (here (http://fonline-aop.net/wiki/index.php?title=Beginner_guide:_Discover_Interface))

Next one is "First step" ( Move, world interaction, line of sight, tagging )

Once this is corrected I will add link on the front page of the wiki.

I've corrected everything major. I can edit it further, but everything is understandable ;).

Looks great!  Very good job.  One addendum I'd make would be to include F5 somewhere in Chat.  Preferably both places should have mention of it.  It may be listed in Shortcuts but seems something that would be helpful to know in relation.

Thanks for your feedback. I had the F5 / scrolling information in the chat & log section.
I will update soon the shortcut page to update it with all shortcuts available ( Like F5, or the shortcut for aiming, ... ).

Some news about the beginner guide.

I added the first three pages on the main page of the wiki and write the next page : Discover the world (http://fonline-aop.net/wiki/index.php?title=Beginner_guide:_Discover_the_world)
If someone has the courage to read it and correct my band english it will be great !

I hope I've done it, will check once more tomorrow (your entire work). You're getting better at it ;).

Thanks Myakot !

I looked at your modification ( to avoid these kind of mistakes in the future ). I tweak again two little things :
- Exit grid are not the only way to exit map ( we can - fuck don't now the word - use the underground access ) and as the player will be in the "faction selection" map ( beginner guide ) I do not want him to look after exit grid on this map ( there is not, we need to use the caravan ).
- Change the "95%/90%" to "maximum" ( much easier to understand )

I also added a new section "Interact with the world" on the same page ( Don't think it was already there when you correct the page.. Or I do this section perfectly ;o ). I did not change any older pages.

Just to be clear: whichever changes you make it's ok, that's your work, you have every right to just change everything I've done with it ^^.

The "underground access word" is Sewers.
And I don't think a newcomer who was never played fallout before needs that extra bit of information ^^, but it's your call! (Having it like some secret for experienced players is nice, they'll learn about it sooner or later anyways, and that's the fun.)

You know it's a wiki so I see that much like a common work and it feel normal to explain this after you took time to improve the page and for wiki stuff I think it's always great to have other players feedback ( you know everyone don't see all in the same way )

It'd be wonderful if the derived statistics page could get a reworking as well.  For some, the explanation is already explanatory enough.  For instance, I'm sure no one's too worried about the poison or radiation formulas.  If you're either, you need to be not.  However, it'd be nice to see some of the other formulas.  Far less important is something simple like Healing Rate that's determined entirely off starting stats, but having the closest currently accepted formulas in shorthand would be wonderful.  Most of these are already spelled out in the  Critical Hit (http://fonline-aop.net/wiki/index.php?title=Critical_Hit) wiki page.  A lot of the individual mentions of such stats could use linking to the page as well.  :)  Thanks in advance and keep up the good work guys.

Thanks for feeback Graves, I will take a look at this.
But please don't mess up with the topics this one if for the beginner guide ;o

I take a look on the issue. I will try to add additional links between the two pages but I do not want to have these formula a two different location on the wiki. We will never think to update it in several places.

Maybe merging these two pages will be the solution. I do not know yet ( And as some derivated stat are not clear for me it's not easy to improve the page ).

Let me start out by apologizing, whenever I play a game I approach it a little more calculating than most.  With reason, however, as one of the worst experiences in a game is playing it some couple dozen hours just to figure out you gimped yourself on one way or another.  Much of the information is sufficient, and really it's more of a round-up of info that's already out there and putting it all together in one spot than bothering the devs.  Your average player may not want or even care to know such stuff, but that's why I had mentioned derived stats in the beginner guide:  IMO character creation is vital towards the experience and all of the derived stats very much so determine your experience and how a character may be best played.

Prepare yourself for a bit of a word wall, but I assure I intend the best.  :)

Starting hit points.  This is already spelled out pretty well, so maybe a linking to the Hit Points page would suffice, though it wouldn't hurt to throw the formula that's there.  136 + (21-Strength)*S/2 + (21-Endurance)*E/2

Healing Rate.  This has two links to it, but a simple formula should work.  Less important than some of the others, but IMO still worth having readily available.

Armor class.  This is supposed to have a page of it's own, it's described decently on the Critical page I believe, but having a quick direct example would be nice.

Some concise explanations or examples of Critical stats being rolled against.

Action Points description seems more in line with old-school Turn-based play.  Technically a combat turn would be 100 points (if there were such a thing) and then turns would be established from there based on regeneration.  That said, I think some note of standing still being 12 base regen.  I don't think the 2 ticks per second thing needs elaboration, but some simple shorthand would be nice.  As above, 12 base regen standing, 0 base regen while moving or acting unless the trait "Double Tap" is applied.  The total being one hundred should be in there for completion IMO :).

AP Regen + would be nice to specify specific values for individual numbers.  1-10 would be great, but a few cherry-picked examples (like 3, 6, and 9) even would be fantastic.

Sight range should be simple enough.  Not sure what the base is at 1, but I know every point of PE seems to add 5 more hexes of view.

Crit chance explanations for aimed and unaimed shots would be nice.  Again, shorthand formula examples would suffice.

I also believe Weight should be included here, as well as the formula behind it.  Then, all 224 broken links to the "Weight" page could be redirected to Derived Stats since it technically is one.

Don't need to apologize for this.
Your list of possible improvement is usefull.

I will take a new look a this and maybe you can give feedback again.
